True Filipino Color
I remember during my training in aesthetic surgery, which was around 2010, it was the peak of glutathione injection. Filipino wants to have lighter or whiter skin, so I wonder why? I found out that having a whiter skin created a status symbol. Whiter means prettier, cleaner looking, richer, and so on. But I wonder where does that mentality really stem from? I heard in a convention in the Philippines discussed about it. It started in the Spanish era. There was a strong casting system in society then. Being white simply means superiority; and I think somehow that idea was subconsciously imbued to us. Come to think of it, the right question that we should really ask is “is being white an advantage in our country?”
Now every time I swim in our condominium pool I get to swim with my swim buddy Joel. He is actually a Canadian, but he resides in our country to do preaching as a pastor and at the same time leadership training. We often talk about Filipino wanting to have whiter skin and Americans wanting to have fairer or browner or a tan skin. Now going back to my question, why do we have brown skin and why does Americans or Canadians have whiter skin. Well the answer is not biology, but simply geography. The Philippines is located in the equator which means our exposure to the sun is much greater, longer and sometimes hotter. As compared way above the equator or lower the equator, they have lesser sun exposure because there are seasons on them where the night is longer and the day is shorter. They have winter season meaning lesser sunlight. Now our brown color will signify a protective layer, kinda like a natural sunblock to prevent skin diseases such as skin cancer or even melasma. A person with white skin needs lesser melanin to absorb more light.
And that is why Filipino naturally has a brown or fair skin. Maybe our goal is not to have a white skin, but to have a nice shiny brown skin like a golden honey hue or caramel hue. That is why in Kutis Filipina, I am currently on a project to achieve that type of hue for my clients. Our goal is to take care and nourish our skin and to give it a more radiant reflection.
Remember, nature created us perfectly; what one must understand is how to enhance what was given to us rather than be envious of others.
